Of these compositions, the seventeen-voice setting by Andreas Hofer, <em>Hofkapellmeister<\/em> in Salzburg, numbers among those reflecting the tradition established by Giovanni Gabrieli and Claudio Monteverdi of multi-chorus settings for voices and instruments. Indeed, in its dramatic-acoustic use of a large church venue with several organs and galleries, Hofer\u2019s composition shows the astonishing parallels between the model of Saint Mark\u2019s Basilica in Venice and the Salzburg cathedral. The work begins with a brief sonata whose alternation of lines between a five-voice choir of cornetts and trombones and a five-voice string ensemble makes for a splendid opening. Following an intonation by the tenor, a dense ensemble sound comprising all eight vocal parts and all instruments evolves that transforms the joyous \u201cEt exultavit spiritus meus\u201d into an ascending, spoken gesture.
